Ways to Stay Active (and have fun doing it)

Matthew Najemy

Let’s face it - we could all use some more exercise in our lives.. Regular exercise has numerous benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, weight management, increased energy levels, and improved mental health. However, getting started with an exercise routine can be challenging, especially for those who have busy schedules (and I think I can comfortably say that that is most of us). The good news is that there are many easy ways to get active and incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Here are some simple ideas to get you started:

  1. Walk or bike instead of driving: If your destination is within a reasonable distance, consider walking or biking instead of driving. Not only will you get some exercise, but you'll also save money on gas and reduce your carbon footprint. More and more towns and cities are creating biking and walking paths that you can use.

  2. Take up a new, fun hobby. Hobbies such as gardening or photography can keep you active and interested at the same time. There’s nothing like killing two birds with one stone and finding a go-to activity that will keep you engaged and offer health benefits is extremely valuable.

  3. Dance: Dancing is a fun and effective way to get active. Put on your favorite music and dance around your living room, or take a dance class. Your local gym will always have different types of dance classes to explore, and they are often pretty cheap even without a membership. Make it a weekly habit if you find one that you really enjoy!

  4. Join a sports team: Joining a local sports team, such as a softball or volleyball team, is a great way to get active and meet new people. They might not be heavily advertised, but if you check with your town’s recreation department, you’re likely to find one. Or start your own!

Contrary to what many people may think, being active and healthy doesn’t exclusively mean going to the gym and lifting heavy weights seven days a week or running 10 miles a day. There are so many unique and fun ways to stay active and many of them include some of your favorite things. I encourage you to build your repertoire of activities that keep you moving - they can make a big difference in your overall well being.

And while you’re at it, you can always change up the way that you eat. Eating a balanced diet can help complement these activities so that you feel healthy and focused throughout the day and across the many activities that you may try.
